FAQs

Can anyone submit a photograph to this collection?

Yes!  Whether you are an amateur or a professional we really want your photographs.  You don’t even need to live in Ruddington, if you have photographs of anything in Ruddington during 2006 then please submit them.

Is this going to cost me anything?

No, it will not cost you anything to submit photographs that you already have.  All we want is a digital copy of any photographs you have.  Please see the submissions page for ways in which you can give us a set of photographs without costing you a penny.

Who decides what is or is not in this collection?

Very simply if a photograph is submitted then it is in the final collection.  However it may not make it to any of the spin-off collections, initially this decision will be made by the primary editors but before any collection is released it will be approved by the secondary editors, please see the about us page for a list of who these people are.

Who can I submit photographs of?

Anyone in any photograph can be submitted as long as they are taken within Ruddington during 2006.  However pictures directly of people (especially minors) may not make it into spin-off collections.

Can I use this photograph collection myself?

The entire collection will be saved for the historical record.  However there will be some spin-off collections that you may use.  The most likely one will be the internet database which will have a cut-down collection available for public use.

What do I benefit from submitting a photograph?

As an individual you will probably not find a substantial benefit.  However subsequent generations will no doubt benefit from this collection, hopefully this legacy is enough to justify the small amount of time it will take to submit you photographs to this collection.

Who is paying for all of this and what do they get out of it?

Nobody is paying for this.  The website and database has been donated and is updated by volunteers.  Copies of the database on DVD will be donated to the local museums.  Individual copies will be sold at a minimal price to cover materials, postage and packaging.

What images can be submitted to this collection?

Anything as long as you own the copyright (you took the photograph) and it was taken within Ruddington during 2006 (see the submission page for more details).  Be creative!

Is there any image that I cannot submit to this collection?

Yes, anything that wasn’t taken in Ruddington in 2006 or to which you do not own the copyright (didn’t take yourself).

What are these photographs going to be used for?

Primarily as a complete collection for future historical use.  This will be stored in a database and left in the care of a local museum, after an agreed time (of about 20 years) this database will be reviewed for general release.  There are a few secondary or spin-off uses, local schools, charities, and journalists maybe offered a cut down collection.  Another cut down and edited collection will be available online for anyone to view.

Can I use any camera?

As long as it takes a picture then yes.  You can use a traditional 35mm camera, a digital camera, a camera-phone, a web-camera, a thermal imaging camera or anything else that will take a picture.  The pictures don’t have to be of a professional quality, we will take quality or quantity!

Are there any restrictions on the type of image submitted?

There are no restrictions at all on image file size or format.  The only restrictions on the subject of the photograph are that they are taken within Ruddington during 2006.  See the submissions page for more information.

Will my house be photographed for this collection?

Yes it will, volunteers and enthusiast will attempt to record everything within Ruddington.  It is ok, you won’t need todo anything to prepare photographs will not be intrusive and will be taken from public property and of the publicly viewable part of your house.  If you want to add you house in a more than cursory way then please feel free to take photographs and submit them yourself.

Why won’t all the pictures be released to the general public?

They will, but in time.  For the moment only a moderated collection will be online.  The full collection will be released later for a future generation by a local museum.

Why do you want me to sign over some rights for my photographs?

The short answer is to make it simple.  If your photograph is really useful and can be published in a book on the history of Ruddington in 25 years then it maybe very difficult to wait until then to obtain your permission.  This collection is not being created to make money and we are only trying to create a useful collection of photographs for future generations.

Can I advertise my business?

Yes, (bet you didn’t expect that one)!  If your business is within Ruddington then we will try to take a photograph of it.  You can help as well, just take some photographs of your own business, the work you do, your company van (in the high street) and the people who work for you.  As long as it is all within Ruddington in 2006 we will include it in the main collection.

Do I need to write a description for the photograph?

A title and description will be added to the each photograph when it is entered into our database.  However feel free to help us out by sending us a title, short description (under 40 words) and the time and place the photograph was taken.
